Abstract

An arrangement for transferring nuclear reactor fuel pellets 14 from a contaminated glove box 4 into a fuel can 12 within a clean glove box 6 comprises a tube 8 penetrating the intervening wall 2 and terminating in a compartment 20 formed by a recessed plate 24. The atmosphere in glove box 4 is at a lower pressure than that in glove box 6 and the pressure in glove box 6 is below atmosphere whereby a gas flow containing contaminated dust particles is maintained through a path consisting of an aperture 26, compartment 20 and a slot 28. The can 12 to be filled is placed by an arm 46 opposite the tube 8 and gripped by a chuck 48. Normally, the end of the tube 8 is sealed by a tape 32 which may comprise a thin film of polyester material. The tape 32 is pierced at intervals with holes equal in diameter to the bore of the tube 8 and can 12 and is advanced by the takeup reel 42 to align the next hole with the tube and can before the latter is advanced to press against the tape and effect a seal with the tube. A push rod (not shown) then transfers the pellets 14 from the trough 58 into the can 12. After withdrawal of the can 12 the tape 32 is again advanced to present an unperforated portion against the tube 8.
