Abstract

In a method of making an electrical connection between insulated wires 4a, 6a1, with a connector 28 comprising an insulating cover surrounding connecting means 30, 32, which define slots, the cover having slit defining edge portions 58 which can be forced apart to provide access to the slots, portions of the wires are first positioned in register with the slits, then forced against the cover to part the edge portions 58 and moved into the slots so that the slot edges 44 -penetrate the wire insulation to -make electrical contact between the wire cores. At the start of the work cycle, the pair of wires 6a1 are already in the position shown following a previous cycle, Fig. 2. The operator inserts wire pairs 4a, 4d in wire holders 100 and places a connector 28 in the pocket 120 of an arm 116, Fig. 4. The holders 100 are then rotated 90 degrees by an electric motor (72) via a chain (76) and sprocket (75), (78), drive, Fig. 5 (not shown), and the ends of the wires are trimmed by cutting edges 113 on a stationary cutter bar 126 cooperating with plates 108, 1081, mounted for rotation with the holders 100. As rotation continues, wire stuffer members 134a and shafts 158a are pivoted by cam follower rollers 170a engaging cam tracks (172) in end plates 64, 66, Fig. 7 (not shown). Thus wire separators 132a are advanced relatively to the stuffer members, thereby separating the wires and aligning them with the slits in the connector 28, Fig. 8A (not shown). The stuffer members 60, 62 are then advanced by a further camming action to force the wires through the slits into the slots of the connecting means 30, 32. The arm 116 pivots in the cutter bar 126 during the work cycle as the ends of arms 112a bear on the connector. The wires are trimmed and stuffed during the first 45 degrees of rotation and further rotation of the arms 112a eject the connector from the pocket 120, whereupon the arm 116 is returned by a spring (124), secured at one end to an ear 122 of the arm, Fig. 9B (not shown).
