Abstract

Compositions for modifying fibrous materials comprise a non-aqueous dispersion of an acid polymer in a medium comprising perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene or 1,1,1-trichloroethane or a mixture of two or more of these. The acid polymer is derived from monoethylenically unsaturated molecules and contains 20-80% by weight of mers of at least one [alpha], #-monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and 80-20% by weights of mers of at least one other [alpha], #-monoethylenically unsaturated monomer having a CH 2 =C# group. The acid polymer is maintained in stable dispersion within the chlorinated hydrocarbon medium, in which it is insoluble, by means of a polymeric dispersing agent having one component which is solvated by the chlorinated hydrocarbon medium and another component which is associated with the dispersion polymer. The dispersion is obtained by the polymerisation of the unsaturated molecules in the medium in which there is dissolved 1- 20% by weight, based on the weight of the unsaturated molecules, of a polymer of at least one (C 8 -C 18 ) alkyl acrylate or (C 8 -C 18 ) alkyl methacrylate. On polymerisation the dispersion contains particles having sizes of 0.03- 10 microns. Materials treated are made of hydrophobic fibers such as linear polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes and resin-treated cotton and wool. After applying the composition. which has a solids concentration from 5-50 % by weight, to the material is dried and optionally the polymer is cured to impart resistance to water and organic solvents. The non- aqueous dispersion may include, in addition to those to impart soil release, modifying agents to impart crease resistance, durable press characteristics and shrinkage control. A catalyst may be incorporated to help in curing and the curing conditions can be varied to provide either. temporary or permanent soil release.
