Improvements in paper calendars and the like, characterized in that the calender comprises a plurality of superimposed cylinders including an intermediate cylinder and outer cylinders having pressure contact cooperation with said intermediate cylinder, bearings supporting said cylinders, the cylinders being ordinary outer cylinders, operable means for relieving bearing loads on all cylinders, other operable means for externally loading said intermediate cylinder, said intermediate cylinder including a drum and a non-rotating shaft extending through said drum and being coaxial with the same, and first force transfer means between said shaft and said drum which apply a controllable force to the inner surface of said drum in an upward direction, which extend for the length of said drum and which can be actuated to alleviate the contact pressures between said cylinders.
