Abstract
A process for preparing a tricyclohexyltin halide, the cyclohexyl rings of which may be inertly substituted, comprises reacting an organotricyclohexyltin with a tin tetrahalide, usually in equimolar quantities at 0-120 C. in a solvent. Specified inert substituents are methyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, t-butyl and phenyl groups. The organo group in the first reactant may be alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl or alkaryl and may be inertly substituted, many such groups being specified. The first reactant is usually obtained by reacting an organotin trihalide and a cyclohexyl magnesium halide in a hydrocarbon solvent, the organotricyclohexyl tin being recovered by hydrolysis of the reaction mixture with aqueous citric acid. The organotin trihalide may be prepared by reacting a tetraorganotin with a tin tetrahalide. In the examples, tricyclohexyltin chloride is prepared from (a) SnCl 4 and C 6 H 5 Sn(C 6 H 11 ) 3 , the latter being prepared from C 6 H 5 SnCl 3 (from SnCl 4 and (C 6 H 5 ) 4 Sn) and C 6 H 11 MgCl and from (b) SnCl 4 and C 4 H 9 Sn(C 6 H 11 ) 3 .
