Abstract
1,200,273. Preparing aryl or vinyl esters. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 27 Nov., 1968, No. 56309/68. Heading C2C. A method of producing an aryl or a vinyl phosphonic acid ester, an aryl or a vinyl phosphinic acid ester, or an aryl or a vinyl phosphine oxide, or a mixture containing at least one such compound, comprises reacting a compound R(Hal) n where Hal is halogen, R is an optionally substituted aryl or vinyl group and n represents 1 or 2, with a trialkyl phosphite, an alkylalkylene phosphite, a dialkyl-phosphonite, or an alkyl phosphinite, optionally in the presence of a solvent, at a temperature between 50‹ and 250‹ C. in the presence of catalytic quantities of a nickel halide and in an inert gas atmosphere. The term "aryl" includes hetero aryl compounds e.g. thiophene. The nickel halide is preferably dried before use and an amount between 0À1 and 20 mol. per cent with respect to aryl or vinyl halide is preferably used. In general, temperatures between 130‹ and 200‹ C. are used, and the reaction may be carried out batchwise or continuously.
