Abstract
In a process for making a composite prestressed asbestos-cement pipe an asbestos cement pipe body 1 is shrunk by removing its free water content, a coating of material 2 is wound under tension on to the pipe body 1 which is then permitted to expand by regaining a free water content from atmospheric moisture, the expansion causing the coating 2 to exert a compressive force on the pipe body 1. The coating 2 may be metallic or mineral or organic strands embedded in thermosetting resin which are wrapped while tensioned and the tension maintained until the resin hardens. The strands may be of asbestos, carbon fibre, metals, ceramic, cotton, carbon, polymers, polyesters or polyolefines and the resins may be for example phenoplasts, aminoplasts, polyester, ethoxyline, polyurethane.
