Polymers and copolymers containing at least a predominant amount of acrylonitrile units are prepared by a process which comprises polymerizing acrylonitrile optionally with at least one other ethylenic compound, in an aqueous medium, at a pH of 1À8-2À7, at a temperature of 30-70 C., in the presence of an alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorate, SO 2 or a compound capable of yielding SO 2 in the polymerization mixture, and an alkali or alkaline earth metal hypophosphite. In the examples a homopolymer of acrylonitrile, an acrylonitrile/ methylmethacrylate copolymer and terpolymers of acrylonitrile, methylmethacrylate and either potassium vinyloxybenzenesulphonate or sodium-methallylsulphonate are prepared utilizing potassium chlorate, S0 2 or sodium bisulphite, and sodium hypophosphite.
