Abstract
A purifying device for heavily fouled water comprises at least one assembly which consists of a plurality of pipes 2, Fig. 2, to conduct the water and a reel-form or drum-form supporting member 1, each pipe being open at both ends and wound around the supporting member in the form of a helical coil such that an outer pipe is wound on an inner pipe. The inner and outer surfaces of each pipe 2 carry a coating of biological fur. The or each assembly is drivably rotatable about a horizontal axis of the supporting member 1 so that the pipes 2 are movable in the fouled water and the atmosphere. Alternatively, the axis may be inclined. The pipes 2 may have corrugated walls of plastics material and apertures 5 to allow entry and exit of the water and be wound to leave spaces (6), Fig. 3 (not shown), along which the water may also flow. The assemblies 4 may be arranged radially in a round tank 7, Fig. 5, and have wheels to run along a rail 8 at the edge of the tank. The winding of the pipes and the direction of rotation of the assemblies may be such that the water enters the pipes near the centre of the tank and flows out adjacent the edge, and settled matter on the bottom of the tank moves towards the centre. Movement of the settled matter is enhanced by the provision of scrapers (12), Fig. 4 (not shown). Each assembly may be encased and water and sludge may be recycled.
