Abstract

1457468 Biocontactor apparatus for polluted liquids M KATO I KATO S KATO Y KATO and T KATO 5 June 1974 [20 June 1973 7 July 1973] 25012/74 Heading B1CA biocontactor apparatus for treating pclluted liquids an a trough 21 comprises a rotatable shaft 24 and a biocontactor body 26 comprising open-ended tubular passages which surround the shaft and each passage is askew to the shaft i.e. inclined thereto. The contactor may be formed from cylindrical synthetic resin tubes 27 welded together Figs. 1, 2. The tubes may be separated by means of short tubular spacers (29) Fig. 3 not shown and their ends at least may be supoprted in apertured discs. (30) Fig. 4 not shown. Alternatively, bundles of parallel tubes 27 supported by bands 32 may be mounted askew to the shaft Fig. 5, or bundles supported in containers or pipes 33, themselves supported by bands 34 may be employed Fig. 6. Pipes 33 may alternatively have passages of trapezoidal, hexagonal or triangular shape formed therein Figs. 7a-7c not shown or the tubes 27 therein may be of unequal length Fig. 7d not shown. The tubes may be formed from wire mesh, Fig. 9, bound in bundles by rings 32 Fig. 8 or in a similar manner to that shown in Fig. 6. The polluted water flowing off and through the tubes may be cooled by fan 41, Fig. 8. The contactor of Figs. 10 and 11 is formed from a plurality of aligned members 42 each having apertures defining passages 48 inclined to the axis of shaft 24 to which the members 42 are splined.
