A process for the preparation of alkylated aromatic compounds, which process comprises reacting an aromatic compound capable of being alkylated with at least two alkyl groups per molecule, in a first zone, with an alkylating agent, in the presence of an alkylation catalyst formed by an acid crystalline alumino-silicate, said catalyst being at least partially dispersed in a liquid phase maintaining said phase in a turbulent motion, extracting the liquid phase from the first zone and contacting at least a part of the extracted phase, in a second zone, with a catalyst consisting of undispersed acidic crystalline alumino-silicate, the second zone being kept substantially free of the alkylation agent and the alkylation catalyst from the first zone.
