Abstract

A procedure for the preparation of a biguanide compound of the formula ** (See formula) ** where R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 may be the same or different and are hydrogen, lower alcohol, lower alkenyl, halo, nitro, amino, di (lower alcohol) amino, halo-lower alcohol, halo-lower alkoxy, halo- lower alkanoyl, hydroxy, cyano, thiacyanate, carboxy, lower carboalkoxy, di (lower alcohol) sulfonamido, lower alcohol-sulfonyl, halo-lower alcohol-sulfonyl, phenoxy, acyloxy, halophenoxy, phenyl or halophenyl; and its non-toxic acid addition salts, which method comprises bringing into close contact an acid addition salt of an aniline of formula ** (See formula) ** where R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are as indicated above, with cyanoguanidine, in the presence of a moderately acidic, non-nucleophilic solvent, at a temperature between 25 and 150ºC, and isolating the resulting phenyl-biguanide.
