Abstract

Compositions substantially consisting of one or more polymers of #-lactones are prepared by mixing the polymers with one or more desactivators of the group consisting of dihydrocarbyl sulphides of formula R-(S) n -R, where each R is a hydrocarbyl group and n is an integer, [alpha]- or #-aryl or allyl-substituted alkyl halides, complexes of boron halides and phospines, are nediazonium salts of complex fluoroacids, tropylium salts and ammonium salts. The polymers of #-lactones are preferably prepared by polymerization of one or more #-lactones of formula wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R, may be the same or different, and may be hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical, which may be substituted. Preferably, R I = R 2 = H, and preferably the #- lactones are [alpha],[alpha]-dialkyl-#propiolactones, e.g. a,a - dimethyl # - propiolactone. Preferably the dihydrocarbyl sulphide is a dihydrocarbyl mono- or disulphide, the hydrocarbyl groups preferably being straight chain hydrocarbon radicals of 7-20 carbon atoms, preferably identical, e.g. dihexadecylmonosulphide. The [alpha]- or #-aryl or allyl-substituted alkyl halide is preferably a chloride, e.g. #-phenyl ethyl chloride. The boron halide/phosphine complex may be BF 3 .PPh 3 . The anenediazonium salt is preferably a salt of hexafluorophosphate, e.g. p - chlorobenzenediazonium hexafluorophosphate. The tropylium salt is preferably tropylium tetrafluoroborate, and the ammonium salt may be ammonium chloride. Preferably between 0À0001 and 5 parts by weight of desactivator per 100 parts of polymer are used. The desactivator is preferably added by impregnating the polymer with a solution of the desactivator and subsequently removing the solvent. One or more stabilizers and/or antioxidants may be included in the composition.
