Abstract

A method of manufacturing polymer fibers consisting essentially of at least one type of aromatic and carbocyclic random distributed homopolyamide or copolyamide, with chain extender links of each aromatic nucleus that are coaxial or parallel and directed in opposite directions, being the orientation of said fibers is characterized by an orientation angle of less than about 45 °, said fibers having an initial modulus of at least 200 gpd, the method of which is to prepare a dope consisting essentially of: (I) a polymer fundamentally comprising at least one type of carbocyclic aromatic homopolyamide or copolyamide, with chain extender bonds in each aromatic nucleus that are coaxial or parallel and are directed in opposite directions and (II) at least one liquid medium selected from the group consisting of: (A) amides and ureas selected from the group consisting of: N, N-dimethylacetamide, N, N-dimethylpropionamide, N, N-dimethylbutyramide, N, N-dimethylisobutyramide, N, N-dimethylmethoxyacetamide, N, N-diethylacetamide, N-methylpyrrolidone-2, N-methylpiperidone-2, N-methylcaprolactam, N-ethylpyrrolidone-2, N-acetylpyrrolidine, N-acetylpiperidine, N, N'-dimethylethylenurea, N, N'-dimethylpropyleneurea, hexamethylphosphoramide and N, N, N', N'-tetramethylurea, (B) concentrated sulfuric acid, (C) hydrofluoric acid and (D) chlorosulfonic, fluorsulfonic or methanesulfonic acids, and spinning said dope by conventional methods and optionally thermally fixing the fibers.
