Abstract

Novel compounds of the formula wherein one of R 1 and R 2 is H and the other is H, Br, F or Cl and X is Br or Cl, may be obtained by reacting the appropriately substituted chromanone with methoxyamine, preferably in a solvent at temperatures from 20 to 100 C. The preparation of the following intermediates is also described: 3,4-dichlorophenol is reacted with propiolactone to form 3-(3,4-dichlorophenoxy)propionic acid followed by ring closure using HF to yield 6,7-dichloro-4-chromanone 3 - (2,3 - dichlorophenoxy)propionic acid and 7,8 - dichloro - 4 - chromanone are similarly obtained 3-bromo-4-fluoroacetophenone is reacted with trifluoroperoxyacetic acid to yield 3 - bromo - 4 - fluorophenol which is converted to 3 - (3 - bromo - 4 - fluorophenoxy)propionic acid and hence to 7 - bromo - 6 - fluoro - 4 - chromanone.
