Abstract

A print paste for printing fibres and textile material comprises a dye or pigment, a thickener and water, wherein the thickener having been obtained by crosslinking a copolymer of 10 to 50 mole % of maleic anhydride, 20 to 50 mole % of an alkyl vinyl ether and 0 to 40 mole % of one or more other copolymerizable monomers, the percentages being with reference to all the monomers, in an inert waterimmiscible organic diluent with from 0.2 to 5% by weight, with reference to the dry copolymer, of a polybasic amine, a polyhydric alcohol or an aminoalcohol and neutralizing the crosslinked copolymer thus formed by adding an aqueous solution of ammonia or by passing in ammonia gas. When a pigment is used, a film forming aq. copolymer dispersion is also added to the print paste. In the examples printing pastes containing vat, disperse or reactive dyes or phthalocyanine pigment are printed onto polyamide, polyester or cotton cloth.
