A process for separating butadiene, substantially free of C3H4 hydrocarbons, from a stream of pyrolysis product, normally gaseous, which comprises hydrocarbons C1 to C5 in a greater proportion, and hydrocarbons C5 to 204ºC, in a smaller proportion, the process comprising: a) introducing said product stream into a first separation zone and separating therein to produce a first fraction comprising C1 to C3 hydrocarbons and a second fraction comprising C3 + hydrocarbons contaminated with C3H4 hydrocarbons; b) passing said second fraction to a second separation zone, and separating therein to produce a third fraction comprising C3 and C4 hydrocarbons including said contaminants, and a fourth fraction comprising C5 + hydrocarbons; c) passing said third fraction to a third separation zone, maintained at a temperature below 107ºC and a pressure of 1.7 to 13.6 atmospheres less than that of said first separation zone, and d) distilling said third one therein fraction to originate a fraction of C3 containing said contaminant, and a fraction of containing butadiene substantially free of C3H4 hydrocarbons.
