Abstract

In a hydrocyclone for separating a slurry into coarse grained and fine grained components and comprising a tangential inlet 3 for the slurry, an outlet 5 at its lower end for the coarse grained slurry components and an outlet conduit 6 at its upper end for the fine grained slurry component, inlets 9 are provided in the wall of a tapered portion 4 of the hydrocyclone for directing water with at least a major component of motion radially of the axis of the hydrocyclone in order to facilitate the separation of the components. The water inlets 9 are connected to a circular conduit 12 communicating with a water supply duct 13 which is provided with a pressure gauge and a regulating valve. The inlets 9 are terminated inwardly by nozzles 10. The inner side of the wall of the tapered portion 4 is lined, at least in the region of the nozzles 10, with a protective resilient coating of rubber or plastics which is provided over the nozzles 10 with incisions 17 which act as non- return flap valves thereby preventing solid particles from entering the inlets 9.
