Abstract

An electrode is provided with spacing means by coating a surface thereof with a suspension of particles of electrically insulating material in a solution or dispersion in a binder and heating to remove solvent and binder, the concentration of insulating material being such that the particles cover not more than 50% of the surface area. The electrode may be the cathode of an electrolytic capacitor and may comprise aluminium foil of which 10% of the surface is covered with an exemplified enamel fit. The particles diameter may be between 2.5 and 200 microns. The electrode may also be used in discharge tubes, or to permit very close spacing of electrodes in electrochemical syntheses e.g. of sodium chlorate or ammonium persulphate. In another application the particles cover a desired pattern on an electrode, which pattern is electrolytically transferred to a conductive substrate, the definition depending on the closeness of the spacing.
