Abstract

A method of storing liquefied natural gas at cryogenic temperatures comprising the steps of introducing a purge gas into an underground stratum containing water at a pressure sufficient to displace water from a predetermined area of the stratum and at a temperature above the freezing point of the formation water, and then introduce the liquefied natural gas in the predetermined area to thereby freeze the water surrounding the predetermined area and form an impermeable barrier in order to prevent the escape of the regasified natural gas vapors they come off of said liquefied natural gas.
