Abstract

Gas mixtures containing H 2 and CO are made by a partial oxidation process in the presence of water vapour at a temperature in the range 1100 to 1600 C., using as feedstock a carbonaceous by-product or waste product of a hydroformylation process. Such by-products &c. include higher alcohols, ethers, carboxylic acids and aldehydes, e.g. isobutyraldehyde. The reaction may be carried out, if desired at elevated pressure, in a conventional apparatus, the reactants being preheated to about 350 C. Preferably, the feedstock is injected as a hollow conical jet, and O 2 (or an O 2 -containing gas) and steam are introduced tangentially about the feedstock inlet.
