Abstract
Metals are bonded to thermoplastic polymers or elastomeric block copolymers by contacting in the presence of compounds capable of reacting to form an aldehyde condensation resin and heating to react them, the compounds being mixed with the polymer before application to the metal. Additionally, the metal can be coated with the compounds. The metal may be continuous sheet, fibres, filaments or cords. The reactant compounds. are (a) a formaldehyde-generator, preferably hexamethylene tetramine, although other compounds are. mentioned, e.g. encapsulated paraformaldehyde, and various melamine and pyridine derivatives, and (b) an aromatic hydroxy compound, (e.g. resorcinol, 1-3 or 1-5 dihydroxynaphthalene) a novolak resin, or melamine or urea, optionally alkylated. Suitably 0.1-10 parts by wt. both of hexamethylenetetramine and of resorcinol are used per 100 parts by wt. polymer. Specified metals are steel, zinc, copper, aluminium, tin and alloys thereof, e.g. brass, "Duralumin" (R.T.M.) Exemplified polymers are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, copolymers of ethylene/ vinyl acetate, and ethylene/ethyl acrylate, and ionomeric ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymers. The polymeric materials can include plasticisers, stabilisers, curing agents, pigments and fillers. In examples, wires are embedded in polymer compositions and metal cones are adhered to polymers, by generating the aldehyde condensate under pressure at 150 - 180 C.
