Abstract
Liquid is clarified utilising the principle that particles in suspension or the like tend to migrate to zones have low velocity gradients. In Fig. 1, material T flows into a channel having opposite walls defined by bands 1, 2 moving at different speeds V 1 , V 2 , V 2 being greater than V 1 . Clarified liquid leaves at K, thickened material at F. In Fig. 2, the bands slope and a partition 8 separates the input T from the clarified liquid K which in this embodiment is carried upwardly. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), input material is fed into the central portion of the channel formed between the bands, and upper and lower partitions are employed. The lower partition may be curved, Fig. 4 (not shown). A number of channels may be formed side-by-side by a single band as shown in Fig. 5, the band and/or rolls one which it runs being perforated. The bands forming a channel may be moved in the same direction.
