Abstract
Ethylene is continuously polymerized in two or more reaction zones, wherein a pressure of at least 1600 atmospheres is used in each zone, a temperature of at least 125 C. is used in the first zone, a #-allylic transition metal compound is used as catalyst in the first zone while a freeradical initiator is used in the second zone, and the temperature and pressure conditions are such that the reaction mixture exists as a single fluid phase in each zone. An organic halide may be added to the #-allylic compound and a chain transfer agent, e.g. hydrogen, may be present in either zone. #-Allylic compounds of zirconium are preferred and in the examples zirconium tetrakis #-allyl dissolved in isooctane or tetralin is used in the first zone and t-butylperbenzoate is used in the second zone, with allyl- or propargyl bromide.
