Abstract

In an ironing machine comprising a driven roller 10 and a movable sole 12 wherein the motor stator 18 is movable by the reaction when the motor 8 is actuated so as to control movement of sole 12 in at least one direction. A shaft 6 is rotatably mounted an bearings 15, 16 in a housing 4 and is rigidly secured to the stator section 18 of the reversible motor 8 on which is provided the casing for reduction geering which transmits the drive to a disc 26 secured to roller 10 adjacent its centre. The end of roller 10 is supported on three ball bearings 28 mounted on housing 4 which also carries brake shoes 30, 32 which co-operate with the interior of the roller cylinder and act in opposite directions. Secured to shaft 6 is a cross-member 34, 36 whose arm 34 is connected to rod 38 which is loosely connected to a pivoted arm 40 biassed upwardly and downwardly respectively by springs 44 and 56. Movement of sole 12 by rotation of shaft 6 is limited by a pin on arm 36 of cross-member 34, 36 which engages stop member 48. Switches 52, 54 are actuated by cam member 50 on 'shaft 6 respectively in the retracted and operative positions of member 12. Brake shoe 32 is pressed out of engagement with roller 10 by an arm 60 on stator 18 when the latter rotates anti-clockwise. A disc 66 on rotor 22 is locked on stator 18 by a brake 64 operated by switch 54. In operation, foot switch 70 is actuated and sole member 12 will move against roller 10 which will rotate if switch 72 i's in position I and motor 8 is energized. Initially, shoes 30, 32 are operative to lock the roller switch 52 being open until shaft 6 rotates but cut out of circuit by switch 70 being in position II. Stator 18 is rotated anti-clockwise and linkage 34, 38 is stretched arm 60 lifts shoes 32 away from roller 10 and pin 46 engages stop 48 to hold stator 18 when roller 10 will rotate clockwise for ironing. When switch 70 is released and returns to position I, switch 52 will energize the motor to rotate clockwise, brake 32 will engage roller 10 again and member 12 will be swung back when switch 52 will be switched off. If switch 72 is pre-set in position II, the roller 10 will not rotate when the member 12 engages it and the arrangement will act as a press. If the current fails, the force on the stator will cease shoe 32 will push arm 60 anti-clockwise to bring links 34, 38 past equilbrium and spring 56 will raise arm 60 to lift member 12 off roller 10. In modifications, the stator movement may be axial and switch 54 may connect a resistance in the motor circuit so that the motor power is insufficient to rotate the roller. Foot switch 70 may have three positions and actuate switch 54.
