22 Claims. (CI. 38-60) This invention relates to a control apparatus for a motor operated ironing mangle.
Electric mangle ironers ordinarily employ a motor rotated ironing roll operating against a reciprocal ironer shoe for ironing laundry articles such as sheets, pillow cases, towels, handkerchiefs, articles of wearing apparel and the like. The ordinary mangle employs a number of control levers and buttons ordinarily operated by the hand and the knees to start and stop the roll, regulate the speed thereof, control the operation of the shoe and regulate similar operating movements of the machine. When these control devices are operated, it is necessary that the operator use one or both hands or the knees thus interrupting the ironing operation, distracting his attention and delaying generally the entire ironing procedure.
The invention here eliminates the above distractions and difficulties by employing a single control member, preferably a foot pedal, movable in space to control selectively the rotation of the roll from a maximum speed in one direction to a maximum speed in the other direction and to control selectively the relative positions of the roll and mangle shoe. This control member or foot pedal is preferably movable in any of a plurality of directions from an initial position. The control member is movable in one direction to start the rotation of the roll, is movable in another direction to reverse the rotation of the roll, and is movable in another direction to cause the shoe to be moved either from its postion away from the roll to a position adjacent to the roll or from its position adjacent to the roll to a position spaced from the roll. In the preferred structure the control member is also movable to regulate the speed of the motor and to do pressing while the motor is operat ing with the roll stationary.
The invention will be described as related to the embodiment shown in the drawings. Of the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of an electric mangle embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view partially broken away of the mangle of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical sectional view of the mangle taken through the right-hand side of Figure 1.

The mangle shown in the accompanying drawings comprises a cabinet having sides 11 and 12 and movably supported on corner casters 13. The top 14 of the cabinet is flat and has hingedly attached thereto a relatively deep cover 15 provided with a handle 15a.
Adjacent to the right-hand end of the top- 14 of the cabinet as viewed in Figure 1 there is positioned an upwardly extending standard 16 rotatably supporting the mangle roll 17 in the usual manner. Located rearwardly of the roll 17 there is provided a cooperating arcuate 2,740,215 Patented Apr. 3, 1956 ice ironing shoe 18 of the customary type mounted for arcuate movement toward and away from the roll 17 on an upwardly extending arm 19. Both the roll 17 and the shoe 18 are adapted to be electrically heated in the ordinary and customary manner.
The arm 19 and thus the shoe 18 are mounted for arcuate movement with an oscillatable shaft 20 extending beneath the top 14 of the cabinet 10 and located rearwardly of the standard 16. The end of shaft 20 beneath the standard 16 has attached thereto a forwardly extending arm 21. The shaft and the arm are keyed together as shown in Figure 3 and'the shoe arm 19 is also attached to the shaft 20. Thus arm 19, shaft 20 and arm 21 are rotatable as a unit.
Beneath the arm 21 there is provided a plate 22 including a forwardly extending portion 22a and a bracket 22b rotatable about the shaft 20. The outer end of the arm 21 is provided with a bolt 23 that extends downwardly through an opening in the end portion 22a and that is provided on its lower end with a head 23a and a washer 24. A helical spring 25 is provided around the bolt 23 extending from the washer 24 to the bottom surface of the plate portion 22a. The spring 25 is employed to provide pressure of the shoe 18 against the roll 17. This shoe is mounted on a bracket 26 which in turn is rotatably mounted on the upper end of the arm 19. As is shown in Figure 3, the shoe 18 is held in position for contacting the outer surface of the roll 17 by means of a leaf spring 27 hearing against the front surface of the arm 19.
In order to operate the mangle to move the shoe 18 into and out of contact with the roll the forward end of the plate portion 22a beyond the spring 25 has attached thereto an upwardly extending rod 28. This rod has its lower end passing through the outer end of the plate portion 22a and is arcuately movable with respect thereto by the provision of a ball connector 29 held in place by a pair of nuts 30 and 31 on opposite sides thereof. The upper end of the rod 28 has attached thereto a housing 32 for a circular cam 33.
The circular cam 33 within the housing 32 is rotat able with an inner shaft 34. This construction is customarily used in mangles and is cooperatively attached to a control mechanism (not shown) so that upon operation of this mechanism, ordinarily by a push button or lever, the shaft 34 will be turned degrees thereby rotating the cam 33 180 degrees from its position shown in Figure 3 to move the shoe 18 away from the roll 17 to a position spaced therefrom. As soon as this 180 degree rotation has been accomplished, an automatic cutoff (not shown) operates to stop rotation of the shaft 34 and thus the cam 33 and retain the shoe 18 in this withdrawn position. As soon as the control mechanism is again operated, the shaft 34 is once more rotated 180 degrees to again rotate the cam 33 and force the rod 28 downwardly to bring the shoe 18 again in contact with the roll 17 in the position shown in Figure 3. The spring 25 bearing downwardly against the washer 24 and thus urging the arm 21 downwardly holds the shoe against the roll. This shoe operating portion of the apparatus and the operating mechanism therefor is not shown in detail as it is purely customary in mangles of this type and these details do not form a part of the invention described and claimed herein.
In order to rotate the roll 17 there is provided a motor 35 beneath the cabinet top 14 at one end thereof. This motor is provided with a pulley 36 on the end of its shaft 37 with the pulley serving to drive a belt 38 extending upwardly into the standard 16. The motor 35 and belt 38 ordinarily operate continuously so long as electric current flows through the motor. However, in the ordinary mangle a clutch mechanism (not shown) is provided for engaging and disengaging the roller shaft from the motor drive. Thus by operating the clutch the roll can be driven or stopped at will while the motor can continue to operate to move the shoe in or out as desired. This clutch mechanism is ordinarily a simple bail clutch which is operated by moving an operating shaft 39 in or out. Here again the motor drive for the mangle including the clutch mechanism for driving and releasing the roll is well known to those skilled in the art, is constructed in the customary manner and as such forms no part of the invention described and claimed herein.
The invention here is concerned with a control apparatus including a single control member movable in any of a plurality of directions for causing individual op erations of different parts of the mangle. In the embodiment shown this single control member comprises a foot pedal 4f) mounted at the bottom of the mangle and preferably toward the rear thereof.
Extending across the bottom of the mangle at the rear thereof and from one side to the other is a rotatably mounted tube 41. This tube has attached thereto for rotation therewith a generally cross-shaped plate 42 provided with side flanges 42a embracing the tube 41 and held in place by inwardly located collars 43 about the tube. Movably mounted on this plate 42 is the foot pedal 40 with this pedal being rotatable about a stud 44 located at the rear edge of the plate 42 and adjacent to the heel portion of the foot pedal 40. The pedal and plate are normally arranged in inclined position as shown in the drawings.
Located within the tube 41 is an elongated member 45 extending from beneath the foot pedal 40 to a point adjacent to the side 12 of the mangle. This member 45 is provided with circular bearing portions 46 and 47 within the tube 41 so that the member 45 and bearing portions 46 and 47 are longitudinally movable with respect to the tube 41. The end of the elongated member 45 beneath the foot pedal 40 is provided with an upwardly extending spur 48 extending through an elongated slot 41a in the tube 41 and held in an opening 49a in the bottom part of the pedal 46. With this arrangement the tube 41 and elongated member 45 are rockable together when the foot pedal 41) is rocked forwardly and backwardly. When the foot pedal is rotated from side to side about the stud 44 the elongated member 45 is moved back and forth within the tube 411.
The right-hand end of the tube as viewed in Figures 1 and within the right-hand side 12. of the cabinet is provided with a rigid member or plate 49. This rigid member or plate is attached to the tube 41 so that it is rockable in a forward and backward direction with the tube 41. This plate 4-9, as shown in Figure 4, is pro vided with a front stop portion 4% normally bearing against the bottom surface 120 of the cabinet side 12. The forward edge of the plate 49 is provided with an extending portion 49b to which is attached a forwardly extending spring 50 having its forward end attached to the bottom portion of the cabinet side 12. This spring serves to hold the plate 49 and thus the tube 41 and foot pedal 40 generally forwardly in the positions shown in the drawings. When the foot pedal 40 is depressed, the tube 41 and plate 49 are rocked as a unit.
The upper end of the plate 49 has rotatably attached thereto a lever 51 extending generally upwardly and forwardly. The upper end of this lever is rotatably attached to the end of a short link 52 which itself is rotatably mounted about a pin 53 at approximately its midpoint with the pin being held in the lower end of a second lever 54 which extends generally upwardly and rearwardly. The lower end of this second lever 54 which has attached thereto the link 52 is of L-shape with the short leg 54a of the L normally extending beyond the end of the first lever 51 and generally aligned therewith as shown in Figure 4. The upper end of the link 52 opposite the lower end to which the first lever 51 is attached has attached thereto a tension spring 55 having its other end attached to the extended end of the leg portion 54a. Immediately to the rear of the link 52 but spaced therefrom is a flange 54b formed as a part of the lever 54. This arrangement provides a lost motion connection between the levers 51 and 54. The spring exerts a force in a direction opposite to that exerted by the spring 56 but is so much weaker that it merely serves to hold the parts 51, 54 and 52 in firm engagement. The lost motion connection provided by the link 52 permits the foot pedal 40 and thus the side plate 49 and first lever 51 to be moved rearwardly an appreciable distance before the second lever 54 is moved. Thus movement of the second lever 54 will not begin until the link 52 has been rotated in a counterclockwise direction as viewed in Figure 4 into contact with the flange 54b.
The upper end of the second lever 54 is attached to a transversely extending rod 56 which is arranged to operate a speed governor control lever 57 on the motor 35.
This speed governor is preferably of the type described and claimed in my prior Patent No. 2,532,345 dated December 5, 1950. As is customary in this type of governor the lever 57 is moved toward or away from the motor 35 to govern the speed of the motor and the greater the distance of movement of the lever 57 away from the motor the faster the motor speed. The projecting rods 58 and 59 serve to transmit this movement to the governing portions of the governor. The details of the speed governor itself form no part of the present invention and any suitable speed governor desired may be employed.
The upper portion of the rotatable plate 49 between the forwardly extending portion 49b and the portion carrying the lever 51 has rotatably mounted thereon a second short link 69 at about the center thereof. The bottom of this short link is connected by means of a coil tension spring 61 to the forward portion of the plate 49 so that the link is constantly urged in a clockwise direction as viewed in Figure 4. The upper end of the link is removably held against a flange 490 formed as a part of the plate 49 as shown most clearly in Figure 4.
The upper end of the link 60 has rotatably attached thereto the rear end of a forwardly extending lever 62. This lever 62 has its other end rotatably attached to the outer end of a crank member 63 that is mounted on an upwardly extending rod 64. The rod 64 is mounted for rotation about its own axis and the crank lever 63 and lever 62 are normally arranged at approximately right angles to each other. The upper end of this rod 64 extends through an opening 14:! in the cabinet top 14 and into the standard 16. The extreme upper end of this rod 64 is provided with parallel longitudinal grooves 64a that engage similarly spaced and shaped circumferential grooves in the clutch operating shaft 39. Thus when the rod 64 is rotated about its own axis the clutch operating shaft 39 is moved out or in depending upon the direction of rotation of the rod 64 to engage and disengage the clutch mechanism respectively to control the rotation of the roll 17.
The right-hand end of the elongated member 45, as viewed in Figures 1, 4 and 5, is provided with a curved operating member 65 of generally arcuate shape which extends upwardly through a slot 41b in the top of the tube 41, through an opening (not shown) in the side wall 12 of the cabinet 10 and through an opening 49g in the lower edge of the plate 49. This inner end of the operating member 65 is provided with an arcuate section 65a lying in a plane generally at right angles to the plane con taining the remainder of the operating member. This curved portion 65a is spaced beyond the plate 49 to the right thereof as viewed from the front of the mangle. Abutting against the left edge of this portion 65a, as viewed in Figure 5, is an arm 66a of a reversing switch 66. This reversing switch is of the ordinary type.
The edge of the curved portion 65:: of the operating member 65 on the other side from the reversing switch arm 66a bears against a lever 67 of generally L-shape with a depending leg 67a extending downwardly to the curved portion 65a of the operating member 65. The short leg 67b extends between a pair of spaced-upwardly extending brackets 68 and 69 mounted on the bottom surface 12a of the side 12 of the mangle cabinet. The lever 67 is rotatable on these brackets 68 and 69 about pins 70 and 71. The long leg 670 of the lever 67 extends upwardly within the side 12 to a point short of the cabinet top 14. The upper end of this vertical leg 67c has rotatably attached thereto a lever 72 extending through an opening 121) in the side 12 of the cabinet. The outer end of this lever 72 is rotatably attached to the lower end of a generally upwardly extending lever 73 which is rotatably mounted about a pin 74. The upper end of this lever 73 operates the control mechanism for regulating the position of the shoe 18 in the manner previously described. Thus on one operation of the lever system 67, 72 and 73 when the parts are in the positions shown in the drawings, the shaft 34 and cam 33 will be rotated 180 degrees to move the shoe 18 away from the roll 17 to the position of the shoe spaced from the roll. When the lever system is again operated, the inner shaft 34 will again be rotated 180 degrees to rotate the cam 33 and move the shoe 18 from its position spaced from the roll to the position shown in the drawings. As had been previously explained, this shoe control and operating arrangement is purely conventional and of the type well known to those skilled in the art and forms no part of the invention described and claimed herein.
With the parts of the mangle in the positions shown in the drawings the apparatus is ready for operation.
The person using the machine then sits in front of it and places his foot on the pedal 40 where it is held in place by the side and bottom flanges 40b and 40c. The main control switch (not shown) for the motor is then turned on. To rotate the roll 17 the foot pedal 40 is depressed forwardly a short distance. This rotates the plate 49 in the same direction and moves the lever 62 forwardly to rotate the rod 64. This rotation of the rod causes the clutch operating shaft 39 to move outwardly and operate the clutch to connect the roll 17 to the motor so that the roll immediately begins to rotate. When the shaft 39 has been moved outwardly to its maximum extent to engage the clutch parts, further rotation of the plate 49 will do no damage because of the provision of the link 60 and spring 61 as this further rotation can merely cause the link to be rotated in a counterclockwise direction as viewed in Figure 4 to move the upper end of the link away from the flange stop 49c and stretch the spring 61.
During this initial depressing of the pedal 40, thespeed governor control lever 57 will remain in its low speed position, as shown in the drawings, because of the provision of the lost motion connection between the levers 51 and levers 54. Thus during this initial movement of the foot pedal, the lever 51 will move with the plate 49 but will serve only to rotate the link 52 about its pivot 53 until the link abuts against the flange 54b. It is only then that the lever 54 and speed governor control lever 57 will be operated to increase or decrease the speed of the motor.
The operator of the mangle can operate the foot pedal at any point in its up and down path to move the shoe 18 from its position away from the T011171) its position against the roll 17 or from its position against the roll to its position away from the'roll. Similarly at any point in the up and down movement of the pedal 49 the reversing switch 66 may be operated to reverse the direction of rotation of the motor 35. Thus in the embodiment shown at any point in the up and down movement of the foot pedal 40 this pedal may be rotated to the right about its stud 44 to rotate the lever 67 in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed in Figure 5,
to operate the levers 72 and 73 and thus operate the shoe control mechanism. Similarly, the foot pedal .40 may :be rotated to the left, as viewed in Figures 1 and 5, :to .0p-

With this invention the entire operation of the mangle can be controlled from the single foot pedal. Thus depressing the pedal slightly in the embodiment shown engages the clutch to rotate the roll while release of the pedal releases the clutch and stops --the rotation of the roll. Similarly, a continued depression of the pedal downwardly increases the speed of the motor so that this motor speed can be easily regulated at will by properly positioning the foot pedal in its vertical path of movement. At any point in this path the foot pedal may be .rotated in a different direction, here to the right as shown in the drawings, to move the mangle shoe from one end of its path of movement to the other, that is, either from its position away from the roll to its position against the roll or from its position against the roll to its position away from the roll. Similarly, the foot pedal may be moved at any point in its vertical path of movement in another direction, here to the left, to reverse the direction of rotation of the motor. Because the switch 66 is of the ordinary spring pressed type wherein the reversing contacts are normally held outof engagement this reversal of rotation of the motor only continues so long as the foot pedal is forcibly held so that the reversingcontact points are in engagement. As soon as the foot pedal is moved back to its normal central position, the motor rotates in its customary direction.
The provision of the links 52 and 60 is an important feature of this invention. As can be seen from the drawings and particularly Figure 4, each of these links is fulcrumed at about its mid-point with the corresponding spring being attached to one end of the link and its operating lever attached to the other. With this arrangement the rotating of each link to stretch the spring shortens the elfective moment arm about the pivot point so that increased stretching of the spring does not excessively magnify the force required to stretch the spring. Thus taking link 60 and spring 61, for example, force required to depress the foot pedal 40 toward the extreme end of its path of movement does not become magnified to the point where excessive Work is required to atfect this depressing action. This is a very important factor in reducing fatigue in the operator using the mangle.
Having described my invention as related to theembodirnents shown in the drawings, it is my invention that the invention be not limited by any of the details of description, unless otherwise specified, but rather be construed broadly within its spirit and scope as set out in the accompanying claims.
I claim:
1. ,In an electric motor operated mangle including an ironing roll rotated by the motor and an ironing shoe movable by the motor into and out of position against the roll, a control member accessibly mounted in themangle and movable in space, the position of which in space selectively controls the speed of rotation of the motor from a maximum speed in one direction to a maximum speed in the opposite direction and selectively controls the position of the shoe with respect to the roll independently of said direction of rotation and of said speed of rotation.
2. The mangle of claim 1 wherein the roll and shoe are mounted on a cabinet and the control member comprises a foot pedal at the bottom rear portion of the cabinet rockable forwardly and from side to side from an initial position in providing said selective controls.
3. In an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a motor for rotating the roll, movable apparatus for starting and stopping roll rotation, a shoe selectively movable into and out of roll engagement and apparatus for thusly moving the shoe, control apparatus comprising: a single control member movable in any of a plurality of directions from an initial position; a motor reversing apparatus; means interconnecting the control member and reversing apparatus for operation thereof on movement of the member in one direction; means interconnecting the control member and shoe moving apparatus for operation thereof on movement of the member in another direction; means interconnecting the control member and roll rotation apparatus for starting roll rotation on movement of the member in yet another direction; motor speed governing apparatus; and means for operating the governing apparatus on movement of the control member.
4. The mangle of claim 3 wherein the movable control member comprises a foot pedal rockable forwardly and laterally from its initial position in controlling the operation of the ironer.
5. In an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a motor for rotating the roll and movable apparatus for starting and stopping roll rotation, control apparatus comprising: a foot pedal rockable about a fulcrum from an initial position; and apparatus interconnecting the pedal and roll rotation apparatus for starting roll rotation on rocking movement of the pedal, the interconnectiug apparatus including a rigid member rockable about said fulcrum with the foot pedal, a first lever operably connected to the rigid member for movement therewith, and a second lever operably connecting the first lever and roll rotating apparatus, said levers being located substantially at one side of the mangle and spaced laterally of the pedal.
6. In an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a motor for rotating the roll and movable apparatus for starting and stopping roll rotation, control apparatus comprising: a foot pedal rockable from an initial position; spring means normally retaining the pedal in said initial position; a rigid member rockable with the pedal and including a first stop means normally holding the pedal in said initial position and a second stop means; a first link rotatable on the rigid member; a first lever rotatably attached to the link; a second lever mounted for rotation about its central axis and operably connected to the roll rotating apparatus for operating the same on rotation of the second lever; a second link rotatably attached to the first lever and rigidly attached to the second lever for rotation of the second lever on movement of the first levers; and second spring means normally holding the first link against the second stop means and thereby permitting continued movement of the rigid means and pedal beyond a predetermined point without corresponding further movement of the roll rotation apparatus to prevent damage thereto.

In an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a motor for rotating the roll and movable apparatus for starting and stopping roll rotation, control apparatus comprising: a foot pedal movable from an initial position; apparatus interconnecting the pedal and roll rotation apparatus including clutch means for starting roll rotation on movement of the pedal; yielding means forming a part of the interconnecting apparatus permitting further movement of the pedal without corresponding further movement of the roll rotation apparatus to prevent damage thereto; motor speed governing apparatus associated with the motor and movable to vary the motor speed; and means interconnecting the foot pedal and governing apparatus for operating" the same upon said further movement of the pedal.
8. The mangle of claim 7 wherein the interconnecting means includes a lost motion connection permitting initial movement of the foot pedal to operate the roll rotation apparatus without corresponding operation of the governing apparatus.
9. In an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a motor for rotating the roll and movable apparatus for starting and stopping roll rotation, control apparatus comprising: a foot pedal rockable from an initial position; a rigid member rockable therewith; a first lever operably connected to the rigid member for movement therewith; a second lever operably connecting the first lever and roll rotating apparatus for operation thereof upon initial movement of the pedal; yielding means permitting movement of the foot pedal beyond the point necessary to operate the roll rotating apparatus without corresponding movement of the roll rotating apparatus; motor speed governing apparatus associated with the motor and movable to vary the motor speed; and means interconnecting the foot pedal and governing apparatus for operating the same upon said further movement of the pedal, the interconnecting means including a lost motion connection permitting said initial movement of the foot pedal without corresponding movement of the governing apparatus.

In an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a motor for rotating the roll and movable apparatus for starting and stopping roll rotation, control apparatus comprising: a foot pedal movable from an initial position; apparatus interconnecting the pedal and roll rotation apparatus including clutch means for starting roll rotation on movement of the pedal; yielding means forming a part of the interconnecting apparatus permitting further movement of the pedal without corresponding further movement of the roll rotation apparatus to prevent damage thereto; motor speed governing apparatus associated with the motor and movable to vary the motor speed; means interconnecting the foot pedal and governing apparatus for operating the same upon said further movement of the pedal; a motor operated shoe selectively movable into and out of roll engagement; apparatus for thusly moving the shoe; and apparatus interconnecting the pedal and shoe moving apparatus for operating the same, the interconnecting apparatus including one portion extending from the pedal to one side of the mangle and another portion located at said one side.

In an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a motor for rotating the roll, movable apparatus for starting and stopping roll rotation, a shoe selectively movable into and out of roll engagement and apparatus for thusly moving the shoe, control apparatus comprising: a transverse rod member at the bottom of the mangle rockable forwardly and rearwardly and movable from side to side; a tube member housing the rod member and rockable forwardly and rearwardly therewith; a foot pedal operably attached to the rod member and tube member for rocking the rod and tube in unison and for moving the rod from side to side relative to the tube; a rigid member rockable with the pedal and tube and including a first stop means normally holding the pedal in said initial position and a second stop means; a first link rotatable on the rigid member; a first lever rotatably attached to the link; a second lever mounted for rotation about.
its central axis and operably connected to the roll rotating apparatus for operating the same on rotation of the second lever; a second link rotatably attached to the first lever and rigidly attached to the second lever for rotation of the second lever on movement of the first lever; second spring means normally holding the first link against the second stop means thereby permitting continued movement of the rigid means and pedal beyond a predetermined point without corresponding further movement of the roll rotation apparatus to prevent damage thereto; motor speed governing apparatus associated with the motor and movable to vary the motor speed; linkage means including a pair of angularly arranged levers located substantially parallel to the plane of the side of the ironer and rotatably interconnected at their ends, one end of one lever being rotatably attached to the rigid member and one end of the other lever being attached to the governing apparatus; a lost motion connection forming a part of said linkage means permitting initial movement of the foot pedal to operate the roll rotation apparatus without corresponding operation of the governing apparatus; a pivoted lever system located at one side of the mangle and operably conthe shoe apparatus on moving the foot pedaland thus.

In an electric mangle including an ironing roll,v a motor operated shoe selectively movable into and out of roll engagement and apparatus for thusly moving the shoe, control apparatus comprising: a readily accessible foot pedal movable from aninitial position; and apparatus interconnecting the pedal and shoe moving apparatus for operating the same, the interconnectingapparatus including one portion extending from the pedal laterally to one side of the mangle and another portion located at said one side whereby the pedal is readily accessible;
said pedal being movable sideways from the initial position to operate the shoe moving apparatus, said one portion of the interconnecting apparatus including a transverse member movable with the pedal, and said other portion including a pivoted lever against which said one portion transverse member abuts.

In an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a motor for rotating the roll, and movable apparatus for starting and stopping roll rotation, control apparatus comprising: a transverse member at the bottom of the mangle movable from an initial position; a foot pedal operably attached to the transverse memberfor thusly moving said member; a rigid member movable with the pedal and transverse member including a first stop means normally holding the pedal in said initial position and a second stop means; a first link rotatable on the rigid member; a first lever rotatably attached to the link; a second lever mounted for rotation about its central axis and operably connected to the roll rotating apparatus for operating the same on rotation of thesecond lever; a second link rotatably attached to the first lever and rigidly attached to the second lever for rotation of the second lever on movement of the first lever; and. spring means normally holding the first link against the second stop means thereby permitting continued movement of the rigid means and pedal beyond a predetermined point without corresponding further movement of theroll rotation apparatus toprevent damage thereto.

In an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a motor for rotating the roll, and movable apparatus for starting and stopping roll rotation, control apparatus comprising: a transverse member at the bottom of the mangle movable from an initial position; a foot pedal operably attached to the transverse member for thusly moving said member; a rigidrhmber movable with the pedal and transverse memberincludi-ng a first stop means normallyholding the pedal in said initial position and a second stop means; a first link rotatable on the rigid member; a first lever rotatably attached to the link; a second lever mounted for rotation about its central axis and operably connected to the roll rotating apparatus for operating the same on rotation of the second lever; a second link rotatably attached to the first lever and rigidly attached to the second lever for rotation of the second lever on movement of the first lever; spring means normally holding the first link against the second stop means thereby permitting continued movement of the rigid means and pedal beyond a predetermined point without corresponding further movement of'the roll rotation apparatus to prevent damage thereto; motor speed governing apparatus associated with the motor and movable to vary the motor speed; linkage means including a pair of angularly arranged levers located adjacent to one side of the ironer and rotatably interconnected at their ends, one, end of one lever being;
rotatably attached to the rigidmember and one end of the: other member being attached to the governing apparatus; and a lost motion connection forming a part of said linkage means permitting initial movement of the foot pedal to operate the roll rotation apparatus without corresponding operation ,ofthe governing apparatus.

Inv an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a shoe. selectively movable into and out of roll engagement and apparatus for thusly moving the shoe, control apparatus comprising: a transverse operating member at the bottom of the mangle, movable from an initial position; a foot pedal operably attached to the operating member forthusly'moving said member; a pivoted lever system located at one side of the mangle and operably connected to the. shoe. moving apparatus; and an extending member on said operating member located adjacent to, the lever system to operate the lever system and thus the shoe apparatuson moving the foot pedal and thus the operating member fromtheir initial positions to move the extending member into operative engagement with the lever system, thereby causing the extending member to apply pressureto said lever system.
.- 16., In an, electric mangle including an ironing roll, a'shoe selectively movable into and out of roll engagement and apparatus for thusly moving the shoe, control apparatus comprising: a transverse operating member at the bottom of the mangle. movable from an initial position; a foot pedal operably attached to said operating member for thuslymoving said member; a pivoted lever system located at, one side of the mangle and operably connected to the shoe moving apparatus; an extending member on said transverse operating member adjacent tothe lever system to operate the lever system and thus the shoe apparatus on moving the foot pedal and thus the transverse member from their initial positions to contact the extending member with the lever system; a motor reversing switch adjacent to the side of the extending member opposite to the lever system to reverse the motor on moving thev foot pedal and thus the rod member in a direction other than said movement from said initial position and thereby closing the switch; and spring means normally holding the reversing switch open.
17. In. an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a m otor for rotating the roll, a shoe selectively movable into and out of roll engagement and apparatus for thusly moving the shoe, control apparatus comprising: a transverse rod member at the bottom of the mangle movable from side to side relative to the mangle; a foot pedal operably attached to the rod member for thusly moving the rod member from side to side; a pivoted lever system located at one side of the mangle and operably connected to the shoe moving apparatus; an extending member on said rod member adjacent to the lever system .on one side thereof to operate the lever system and thus the shoe apparatus on moving the foot pedal and thus the rod member to; one'side from their initial positions; a motor re- 'versin'g switch adjacent to the opposite side of the extending' member to reverse the motor on moving the foot pedal and thus the rod member to the opposite side from their initial position and thereby closing the switch; and spring means normally holding the reversing switch open.

In an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a motor for rotating the roll, movable apparatus for starting and stopping roll rotation, a shoe selectively movable into and out of roll engagement and apparatus for thusly moving the shoe, control apparatus comprising: a transverse rod member at the bottom of the mangle rockable forwardly and rearwardly and movable from side to side; a tube member housing the rod member and rockable forwardly and rearwardly therewith; a foot pedal operably attached to the rod member and tube member for rocking the rod and tube in unison and for moving the rod from: side to side relative to the tube; a rigid member rockable with the pedal and tube and including a first stop means normally holding the pedal in said initial position and a second stop means; a first link rotatable on the rigid member; a first lever rotatably attached to the link; a second lever mounted for rotation about its central axis and operably connected to the roll rotating apparatus for operating the same on rotation of the second lever; a second link rotatably attached to the first lever and rigidly attached to the second lever for rotation of the second lever on movement of the first lever; spring means normally holding the first link against the second stop means thereby permitting continued movement of the rigid means and pedal beyond a pre determined point without corresponding further movement of the roll rotation apparatus to prevent damage thereto; motor speed governing apparatus associated with the motor and movable to vary the motor speed; linkage means including a pair of angularly arranged levers located substantially parallel to the plane of the side of the ironer and rotatably interconnected at their ends, one end of one lever being rotatably attached to the rigid member and one end of the other lever being attached to the governing apparatus; a st motion connection forming a part of said linkage means permitting initial movement of the foot pedal to operate the roll rotation apparatus without corresponding operation of the governing apparatus; a pivoted lever system located at one side of the mangle and operably connected to the shoe moving apparatus; and an extending member on said rod member located adjacent to the lever system to operate the lever system and thus the shoe apparatus on moving the foot pedal and thus the rod member from their initial positions to move the extending member toward the lever system, thereby causing the extending member to apply pressure to said lever system.

In an electric mangle including an ironing roll and a motor for rotating the roll, control apparatus comprising: motor speed governing apparatus associated with the motor and movable tovary the motor speed; a foot pedal beneath the ironer spaced inwardly from the sides thereof for ready access, the pedal being movable from an initial position; a rigid member located along one side of the mangle operably connected to the pedal for movement therewith; and linkage means also at said one side of the mangle and interconnecting the rigid member and governing apparatus for operating the same on movement of the foot pedal, the foot pedal and rigid member being rockable and the linkage means comprising a pair of angularly arranged levers located substantially parallel to the plane of the side of the mangle and rotatably interconnected at their ends, one end of one lever being rotatably attached to the rigid member and one end of the other lever being attached to the governing apparatus.

In an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a motor for rotating the roll and movable apparatus for starting and stopping roll rotation, control apparatus comprising: a foot pedal movable from an initial position; and apparatus interconnecting the foot pedal and roll rotation apparatus for starting roll rotation on movement of the pedal, the interconnecting apparatus including a rigid member movable with the foot pedal, a first lever operably connected to the rigid member for movement therewith, and a second lever operably connecting the first lever and roll rotating apparatus, said levers being located substantially at one side of the mangle and spaced laterally of the foot pedal.

In an electric mangle including an ironing roll, a motor for rotating the roll and movable apparatus including clutch members engageable and disengageable for starting and stopping roll rotation, control apparatus comprising: a foot pedal movable from an initial position; apparatus interconnecting the foot pedal and roll rotation apparatus for starting roll rotation on movement of the pedal, the interconnecting apparatus including a rigid member movable with the foot pedal, a first lever operably connected to the rigid member for movement therewith, and a second lever operably connecting the first lever and roll rotating apparatus, said levers being located substantially at one side of the mangle and spaced laterally of the foot pedal; and yielding means operatively associated with said foot pedal and interconnecting apparatus yielding on further movement of the pedal to permit said further movement of the pedal without substantial corresponding further movement of the roll rotation apparatus to prevent injury to said movable apparatus including the clutch members.

In an electric mangle including an ironing roll and a motor for rotating the roll, control apparatus comprising: motor speed governing apparatus associated with the motor and movable to vary the motor speed; a foot pedal beneath the ironer spaced inwardly from the sides thereof for ready access, the pedal being movable from an initial position; a rigid member located along one side of the mangle operably connected to the pedal for movement therewith; and linkage means also at said one side of the mangle and interconnecting the rigid member and governing apparatus for operating the same on movement of the foot pedal, the linkage means including a first lever operably connected to the rigid member for movement therewith, and a second lever operably connecting the first lever and governing apparatus for operating the same on movement of the foot pedal, said levers being located substantially at one side of the mangle and spaced laterally of the foot pedal.
