Abstract
Apparatus for automatically loading blocks 1 on to pallets 5 comprises a horizontal turntable 41 rotatable (by means 43-46) about a vertical axis into at least two positions angularly displaced by 90 degrees and which is vertically movable, a pallet magazine 4 adjacent the turntable for storing a vertical stack of pallets, means 75-79 for moving a pallet from the stack on to the turntable when the latter is in its uppermost position, means 21-26 for gripping a layer of blocks and moving them on to the pallet or the upper layer of blocks thereon, the arrangement being such that the turntable is rotated through 90 degrees and lowered the depth of one layer of blocks immediately after a layer of blocks has been deposited on the pallet and before another layer is deposited thereon. The installation stacks the blocks on the pallet in successive crosswise tiers, and comprises a block supply station 3, a loading station 2, a pallet supply station 4 and a station 6 for discharging loaded pallets. Blocks supplied at table 12 of station 3 are pushed by bar 16 between guides 15 to table 14. Groups of blocks are transferred to station 2 by a carriage 17 having a block grab 9 and running on rails 23, 24. At station 2 is provided a frame 31 enclosing a cage 33 movable vertically by means 34, 36 and provided with the turntable 41 on which is disposed a pallet. The cage is initially fully raised for the pallet to receive the first group of blocks, and is lowered in steps to receive subsequent groups, the turntable 41 being moved through 90 degrees each time by the jack 43 and crank 46. When the pallet is fully loaded a pusher 75 advances, arms 78, 79 extending therefrom pushing the loaded pallet on to rollers 85 at the discharge station. The pusher also moves an empty pallet on to the turntable. The pusher is provided with stops which co-operate with mechanism (Figs. 3-7, not shown) which drop the lowest of a stack of empty pallets into a position between the arms 78 when the pusher returns to its original position.
