Abstract

Apparatus for twisting yarns which are fed to a knitting machine comprises means, e.g. a sley bar with upstanding spaced pins, for retaining a plurality of closely spaced yarns Y1.. Y4 in generally parallel disposition, means for separating the yarns into groups G1, G2, and transversely movable means for simultaneously engaging a plurality of groups of yarns and applying false twist to the said groups of yarns. The spaced yarns Y1 .. Y4 are passed through driven nip rolls 25, 26 and over a heater block 31. The yarns are then passed between pins 63 on blocks 58, 60 and 61, 62, the blocks 58 and 61 being movable relative to the associated blocks 60, 62 to group the yarns in pairs. The yarns in spaced relation are passed through further pins and tape spacing members S1 and S2 are applied to maintain the yams in spaced relation. The grouped yarns G1, G2 and passed between the lower run 56 of an upper endless belt and the upper run 42 of a lower endless belt, which runs 56 and 42 move in opposite directions to apply false-tiwst to the yarn groups, the twist being set over the heater 31. The yarn groups are passed over pins 75 immediately upstream of the spacer members S1 and S2. The spacer members S, and S2 are removed and the yams are separated by the pins 75 and the separate bulked yarns are fed through driven nip rolls 83, 84 to a knitting machine.
