Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the Formul[mu] I and II wherein A represents a hydrogen atom or the group -RCH.CH 2 OH, provided at least one A is a -RCH.CH 2 OH group, R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl C 1-13 group, R1 represents the same as R or a hydroxy alkyl C 1-13 group, Z is an alkylene C 2-4 radical, X represents an alkyl C 1-13 , alkoxy C 1-13 or hydroxy group or a bromine or chlorine atom, M represents a hydrogen, sodium or potassium atom, the ammonium group or its amine derivatives, m is an integer from 0 to the number of replaceable hydrogen atoms on the benzene nucleus and n is an integer from 1 to 5 and their ferrous and ferric chelates. They are prepared by the hydrolysis of the corresponding nitrile and reacting the free acid with a soluble iron salt to form the chelates, if desired. Diethylene triamino - tri - 2 - hydroxyethyl - bis - (o - hydroxyphenyl acetic acid) [2-(o-hydroxyphenyl)]-2- hydroxy ethylglycine and [2-(o-hydroxyphenyl)] - bis - 2 - hydroxyethylglycine are also exemplified. N,N1 - Ethylene - bis - [2 - o - hydroxyphenyl]-2- hydroxy ethylglycinonitrile is prepared by reacting ethylene bis-([alpha]-amino-o-hydroxyphenyl acetonitrile) with ethylene oxide or 2-chloroethanol. Ethylene bis - ([alpha] - amino - o - hydroxyphenylacetonitrile) is obtained by treating the reaction product of 2 moles of salicylaldehyde and 1 mole of ethylene diamine with hydrogen cyanide. 2 - o - Hydroxyphenyl - 2 - hydroxyethylglycinonitrile is obtained by reacting N-(2- hydroxyethyl) - 2 - hydroxybenzalamine with hydrogen cyanide. The compounds of Formul[mu] I and II may be used as chelating agents suitable for the correction of metal deficiences in plants.
