Abstract

The toe of a stocking is formed of at least two layers by turning the end of the fabric tube with the aid of welt instruments in a welt dial in the same manner as a turned welt is usually formed. Prior to retransference of the loops from the welt hooks back to the needles a yarn or yarns is or are wound spirally about the fabric portion extending between the needles and welt hooks and pulled sufficiently tightly to constrict the fabric and in effect close the tube. The ends of the spirally wound yarn or yarns is or are secured in the fabric and on completion of the turns the welt hooks transfer their loops to the needles. This construction provides an effective closure of the toe. The turned portions forming the toe may have a stitch variation compared with the fabric body and the central portion intermediate the two layers and about which the yam or yarns is or are wound may be knitted of a finer or elastic yarn. The wound turns may also be elastic yarns. A double turned portion for the toe having in effect four layers may be knitted by first knitting one portion of fabric extending between the needles and welt instruments followed by a second portion of fabric which extends between the welt instruments and needles so as to provide two layers whereafter the yarn turns are wound around both layers and the two layers subsequently doubled on themselves to close the toe.
