Abstract

An integral, anisotropic, microporous membrane of a synthetic organic polymer which absorbs less than 10% water at 100% R.H. and 25 C. has a surface layer having a plurality of pores of diameter 1-1000 mÁ and preferably a thickness of 0À1-5À0 Á, and a support layer of sufficiently large pore structure that it provides no significant overall resistance to hydraulic flow through the membrane. The polymer may be 5-90% crystalline with a Tg of at least 20 C. The membrane is made by preferentially contacting one side of a cast film of an organic solution of the polymer with a diluent highly compatible with the organic solvent and sufficiently incompatible with the polymer to cause immediate precipitation thereof, and maintaining the membrane thus formed in contact with the diluent until substantially all of the solvent has been replaced by the diluent. Many polymers are listed these are preferably polar. The following are exemplified poly-(bisphenol A carbonate) in dimethylformamide (DMF), PVC in DMF*, a modacrylic polymer in DMF* and a polysulphone in N-methyl-2- pyrrolidone. The diluent is water. A " solution modifier " may be added, which alters the solvating effect of the diluent or organic solvent, e.g. ZnCl 2 is added to the solutions * above.
