Abstract

1396091 Semipermeable membranes BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd 18 Feb 1972 [18 Feb 1971] 4897/71 Heading B5B [Also in Division B1] Semipermeable membranes are made from a copolymer prepared from a monomer of a substituted or unsubstituted vinyl type having the formula and of hydrophilic properties and a similar compound but of hydrophobic properties. The proportions and properties of the monomers are sufficiently balanced for the copolymer to be insoluble in, but able to absorb, water. The copolymer is dissolved in an organic polar solvent which readily dissolves it and which has a relatively low vapour pressure (as herein defined), the solution is cast into a film, solvent is evaporated from it, and the film is then treated with water for at least 10 minutes. The preferred hydrophilic monomers are styrene, methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile; the preferred hydrophilic monomers are acrylic acid and methacrylic acid. The solvents used in the exemplified processes are dimethylformamide, dimethylsulphoxide, dimethylacetamide and triethylphosphate. Optionally, an additional solvent or cosolvent is added to the solution. Such liquids are water, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and benzene. Addition of these gives a membrane of porosity such that macromolecules do not pass across it but smaller molecules do. If membranes able to reject salts are required these additional liquids are not added.
