Abstract

Apparatus for winding a sheet or strip 4 into a coil on a cylindrical mandrel 9 is characterized in that a housing having a cylindrical inner surface is disposed concentrically and coaxially with the mandrel, the said housing being divided into two equal parts 1, 2 pivoted together at 5 to enable the parts to be moved through an angle sufficient to enable the completed coil to be readily extracted from the housing and the apparatus further including fluid pressure means for continuously applying the sheet or strip against the mandrel during the initial stages of the winding. The cavity between the mandrel and the housing is closed in fluid-tight manner at its ends 14 and 15 and fluid pressure is supplied to the cavity through a duct 7 attached to part 1 of the housing and peripheral apertures 13 in the housing walls. In operation the end of the sheet is introduced through the gap 3 in the housing and the mandrel rotated by an electric motor. Jets of fluid pressure hold the sheet to the mandrel until sufficient layers have been formed to ensure adhesion. A roller may be provided to strengthen the force of application to the mandrel. In another embodiment (Fig. 6) the mandrel is mounted on a hollow driven shaft 20 closed at one end and its bore in communication with a source of high vacuum. The outer surface of the mandrel has longitudinal channels 21 communicating with radial orifices 17 and with the bore of the shaft 20. The end of the sheet is held to the mandrel by the atmospheric pressure exerted on the outside face thereof assisted by the suction exerted through the orifices 17. The vacuum is broken as soon as there are sufficient turns on the mandrel.
