Abstract

Apparatus for simultaneously sawing off the ends of a nuclear fuel element 1 disposed horizontally in cradles comprises two similar cutting machines 35. Each machine comprises threaded rods 58 which pass through a hole 60 in the base (Fig. 16), reversing pinions 61, a torque limiter 63 and an operating control 64. The frames 55 of the machines have an adjustable stop 65 mounted on a threaded rod rigidly fixed to the frame, and bearing shoes 66, the upper faces 66a of which are situated above the bearing faces of the cradles. The frames 55 are equipped with a cutting tool such as a band saw 67 driven by pulleys 68 and a power unit 69, which may be located within the apparatus provided it is protected from radiation by a shield made of lead or similar material. To assist the functioning of the cutting machines, the frames of the machines are provided with guides 70 enclosing the band 67, a remote-control tensioner 71 for regulating the tension on the band, brushes 72, a nozzle 73 supplying decontamination liquid to the band, a grille 74 pivoted to turn about an axis 75, a receptacle 76 adjacent to the grille 74, for collecting the inert ends 2 of a fuel element, and a bin 77 for recovering fragments, situated below the grille 74. The bottom of this bin is formed by a filter, 80, which holds back particles of material, but allows the decontamination liquid to pass into a drip pan 81.
