Abstract

Thermoplastic gramules comprising thermoplastic resin surrounding and bonded to a multiplicity of glass filaments extending predominantly throughout the lengths of the granules and in substantially parallel directions thereto, said filaments constituting 70 to 90 weight per cent of the granules which are at least 1/8 inch long, may be prepared by continuously passing the glass filaments through a bath comprising the resin and cutting the resulting resin impregnated filaments into granules of at least 1/8 inch length while maintained at a temperature of at least 80 F. In examples granules are prepared from glass filaments impregnated with (1) aqueous polystyrene and styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer emulsions, (2) molten polypropylene, (3) polyurethane emulsion, (4) polyethylene emulsion and (5) toluene solution of polystyrene, and the resulting concentrate granules compounded with unreinforced resin. Other resins specified are acrylic, ABS, polyvinyl chloride, polyformaldehyde, polysulphone, polyphenylene oxide, polyamide, polyester and polycarbonate resins, and the glass filaments may be sized with polyesters or polyvinyl acetate or pretreated with silane or chromium complex coupling agents.
