Abstract

1,251,641. Polymer compositions. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 11 Oct., 1968 [10 Aug., 1967], No. 36854/67. Headings C3P and C3R. Reinforced thermoplastics material comprises a thermoplastic and 4 to 60 weight per cent of reinforcing fibres of tensile strength at least 100,000 p.s.i., a Young's Modulus of at least ten million p.s.i. and with at least 85 per cent of the fibres within + 25 per cent of an aspect ratio within the range 10 : 1 to 100 : 1. The thermoplastic may be polystyrene, toughened polystyrene, ABS terpolymer, methacrylate/butadiene/styrene terpolymer, polyvinyl chloride, polyacetal, polysulphone, polycarbonate, polyethylene terephthalate, polyamide, polypropylene or polymethyl methacrylate. The fibres may be glass, asbestos or carbon fibres, or silicon carbide, silicon nitride or potassium titanate. The fibres may be added to a melt or solution of the thermoplastic or to a precursor thereof which is subsequently polymerized. Examples described compositions of asbestos fibres and (1 and 2) polyhexamethylene adipamide, (5) polypropylene, (6) toughened polystyrene, (7) ABS terpolymer, polycarbonate, polycaprolactam and polymethyl methacrylate; silicon nitride whiskers and (3) polyhexamethylene adipamide; silicon carbide whiskers and (5) polycaprolactam prepared in situ using a lithium hydride/acetyl caprolactam catalyst; carbon fibres and polycaprolactam; and glass fibres and polyhexamethylene adipamide.
