Abstract

A styrene polymer of high impact strength is prepared by subjecting a solution of at least 10% by weight of a high cis-polybutadiene, or a high cis-butadiene/styrene copolymer, in a styrene polymer-forming monomeric material to conditions whereby polymerization is effected with phase inversion, the high cis-polybutadiene or high cis-butadiene/styrene copolymer having a viscosity measured on a 5% by weight solution thereof in styrene at 25 C. of 10 to 45 centipoises. The high cis-polymers contain at least 30% butadiene units of cis-1,4 structure and not more than 10% of 1,2 structure and the butadiene-styrene copolymer contains a major proportion of butadiene. Polymerization with phase inversion is effected by subjecting the polymer-monomer material to heating with shear agitation, after which the polymerization is completed in bulk or aqueous suspension. In the examples styrene and acrylonitrile, or styrene alone, are polymerized in the presence of polybutadiene.
