Abstract

A TiO 2 concentrate is obtained by mixing ilmenite with an excess of at least 36% HCl, boiling the mixture to drive off about one-third of the HCl and to precipitate the Ti which initially dissolved with the Fe, separating the solid TiO 2 and gangue, and recycling the filtrate after saturating it with HCl gas and removing Fe as FeCl 2 . The initial mixture may be heated to boiling over 15-30 mins, then boiled for 2-3 hrs. The separated solid may be washed with 10% HCl, then chlorinated in fluidized bed to give TiCl 4 . The filtrate may be reduced with F2 at 60-70 C., cooled to 20 C. and saturated with HCl at 20-26 C. to crystallize out FeCl 2 .4H 2 O, which is dried and thermally decomposed. The HCl gas so produced is used initially to saturate the filtrate, the final concentration from 30% being effected with the HCl driven off in boiling the initial mixture. The acid is preferably of 36-38% strength.
