Abstract

Compounds of formula wherein R is a 5-membered ring containing 1-3 hetero (N, O and/or S) atoms, and R 1 is H, OH, C 1-5 alkyl or C 1 _ 5 alkoxy, are prepared by reducing the corresponding 5-nitrobenzimidazoles the latter are prepared by reacting the unnitrated compounds with conc. HNO 3 in an acidic solvent medium.
