Abstract

The cable core, comprising, for example, the insulated conductors 10 (Fig. 3), surrounded by a tape 12, is provided with a metallic shield 14, comprising a metal foil 24 (Fig. 5), having thereon a protective coating 32 or 34, of polyolefin, comprising an inner region 36 which is a copolymer containing reactive groups which give a good bond with the metal, and an outer region 38 which bonds less well to the metal. The copolymer may contain carboxyl groups. The outer region may be a polyethylene homopolymer. The inner and outer regions of each coating may be separate layers bonded together, as in Fig. 5. Alternatively, the copolymer may be distributed in the homopolymer with decreasing concentration from the face adjacent the metal (Fig. 6, not shown). The seam of the shield may be produced by sealing opposite faces of the coated foil (Fig. 3) or by sealing the two edges of the inner face (Fig. 4, not shown). An outer coating 18, for example of polythene, may be applied. The metal may be aluminium, copper, or steel.
