Abstract
Phosphoric acid is produced from phosphate rock, phosphoric acid and sulphuric acid in apparatus in which the reaction slurry flows from one chamber to the next alternately via over flow and underflow baffles which define the chambers and which may be heat conductive. Foam formed on the surface may be sucked in through slots 54 in draft tubes 52 and broken by agitators 50. The apparatus also comprises a steel or concrete shell 60, acid impervious neoprene layer 58 and abrasion and acid resistent carbon brick 59. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, phosphate rock and phosphoric acid are reacted in chamber 78 in heat exchange with chambers 70, 72 and 74 through which chambers the product from chamber 78 flows while it is reacted with sulphuric acid added in each chamber. In the embodiment of Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), phosphate rock/phosphoric acid is introduced into a digester (83) via a channel (92) so that it is heated to reaction temperature by heat exchange with the walls of chambers (86 and 88) in which sulphuric acid and already formed monocalcium phosphate are reacting.
