Abstract
A surface is coated with at least one of Fe, Co, or Ni by discharging a solution or solutions containing a salt of Fe, Co, or Ni and at least one reducing agent on to the surface to form thereon a coating from which the metal deposits on said surface, and immediately before or at the time when any given zone is coated with said solution(s), that zone is contacted by dissolved Pd salt. The surface is of glass, plastics or ceramics, the reducing agent is an alkali metal hypophosphite or borohydride, and the metal salt solution may contain ammonia or Na citrate as complexing agent. In Fig.1, Pd salt, coating metal salt, and reducing solution from tanks 29a, 29b, and 29c respectively pass to reservoirs, 17a, b, c and down fabric wicks 23a, b, c to metal wires 24a, b, c near the surface of glass sheet 11, moved in direction 12, and there is formed on the glass a triple liquid coating layer 31a + b + c from which coating metal deposits on to the glass. The fabric wicks 23 may be replaced by spray atomizers Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) or ejectors and the coating metal salt and reducing solution may be mixed prior to application to the substrate Fig. 5 and 6 (not shown) or all three solutions may be applied simultaneously.
