Abstract
Styrene as the sole polymerizable constituent with optionally a minor proportion of a modifier consisting of an elastomer or of methacrylic acid, with optionally a lubricant, is continuously bulk polymerized by being passed between two diathermic walls for a reaction period of 15 min. to 3 hours at a constant temperature between 130 and 160 C. corresponding for the polymer formed, to a Fikentscher K value of 50-80, the ratio between the heat exchange surface area S of both walls and the thickness e of the monomer circulating therebetween, per unit volume of the reaction mixture, being at least 0À02 cm.-2 in CGS units a mixture of unreacted monomer and styrene polymer containing 30-80% by wt. of polymer is collected at the outlet of the walls and this polymer is separated from the monomer. The elastomer may be a styrene-butadiene or natural rubber. A polymerization apparatus is shown in Fig. 8.
