Abstract
In a process for the production of ethylene oxide by the silver catalysed oxidation with molecular oxygen, ethane is present in the reaction mixture in an amount of at least 10 mol. per cent and a catalyst activity inhibitor is present in an amount of 5-70 parts by weight per million. The ethane may be present in the ethylene feed as an impurity or it may be added separately. The preferred inhibitor is ethylene dichloride but other halogen-containing compounds may be used. Suitable catalysts are silver on a support e.g. alundum, silicon carbide, silica, carborundum or alumina and they may be used in a stationary bed or in fluidized or suspended form.
