Abstract
In the manufacture of flat glass in ribbon form by delivery of molten glass 1 on to a bath 3 of molten metal, the glass 1 is initially confined and allowed to spread out on the bath 3 only to the extent defined by angularly disposed, splayed surfaces 11 of members 5 of a gas-permeable, porous refractory material, while a pressurized gas is blown out from-the surfaces 11 against the edges 10 of the glass, the molten glass then being permitted to flow laterally outwardly unhindered to the limit of its free flow to form a ribbon 11 of glass. As shown, each member 5 is formed with a cavity 6 parallel to the surface 11 and a conduit 7 is used to conduct gas under pressure to the cavity. The gas used is preferably non- oxidizing, e.g. nitrogen. The conduit 7 is surrounded by a conduit 9 which leads to a cooling box 8 secured along the top of member 5 and a conduit (91) removes the cooling water. The member 5 is preferably of graphite. In a modification, the surfaces 11 run parallel before splaying out. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,112,071.
