Abstract

A sighting device for weapons, navigation instruments, surveying instruments, optical equipment or directional radio equipment comprises an apertured member 6 of light transmitting material having a radially thin tubular opaque lining on its inner wall. The member 6 is mounted between an outer cylindrical sleeve 5 and a thin-walled metal sleeve 7 forming the lining, the surfaces of the sleeves adjacent the member 6 being highly reflective such that a person looking through the sight sees a circle of light bounded by the dark silhouettes. The light transmitting material may be translucent and may comprise a polymethacrylate resin. A radioactive luminous paint is located in a groove 9, e.g. promethium activated phosphorus paint, to give a circle of light in poor ambient light conditions. Phosphor gas under pressure in a torus may also be used as a luminous material. The outer sleeve 5 may be integral with a mounting pillar 12 or may be detachably located on a pillar so that it is vertically adjustable thereon (Fig. 5, not shown). The sighting device is secured to a weapon as a foresight or midposition sight (Fig. 1, not shown) by a screw 14 and pin 15. The device may be used as a foresight and a backsight on the same weapon (Fig. 10, not shown).
