Abstract

A three -dimensional openwork material is formed by a series of tubes of electro-deposited metal running in random directions and joined together by electro-deposited metal, intercommunicating cellular spaces being formed between the tubes. Typically the material is produced by electro-deposition of metal on to the strands of a synthetic plastics open-cell foam material which has been rendered conductive. The plastics material may be a reticulated poly - urethane foam and may be rigidified by coating it with phenol-formaldehyde resin and made conductive by sprinkling conductive powder e.g. graphite or metal such as copper or copper bronze over the resin while it is still tacky. The foam material may be rendered conductive by chemical deposition of metal e.g. by reducing ammoniacal silver nitrate in situ with hydrazine hydrate or by sensitizing with stannous chloride, activating with palladium chloride and then effecting electroless deposition of silver, copper or nickel. Electro-deposition may be effected by pumping electrolyte, e.g. an acid solution of copper sulphate containing potash alum, through a tube 1 of insulating material in which a disc of foamed material 7 is located with a cathode connection being made to a silver face 10 of the disc and spaced from a grid anode 9. A subsequent electroplating of nickel may be applied. The plated plastic may be fired to remove the foam from the interior of the tubes leaving only a small ash residue.
