Abstract
Organic high polymers are melt spun in an apparatus comprising a heating container 1, 2, 3 heated by circulation of a liquid or gaseous medium, a spinning pump unit 7, 8 connected by a melt duct 10 of variable length (having a helical turn 11) to a separate nozzle assembly 24 to 30 including a nozzle plate 25 for forming filaments, the pump unit 7, 8 and the nozzle assembly 24 to 30 being located within the heating container 1, 2, 3, an aperture 4 below the nozzle assembly defined by radiating surfaces parallel to the intended direction of issue of the filaments, the radiating surfaces being located within the heating container, that face of the nozzle assembly adjacent the nozzle plate being mounted in the heating container and being formed with a surface held in contact with the inner side of the bottom wall of the heating container, the melt duct 10 being connected in fluid-tight manner by a releasable clamping device to an inlet aperture 36 of the nozzle assembly, the clamping device serving also to press the nozzle assembly against the inner side of the bottom wall of the heating container, the construction being such that the pump unit and the nozzle assembly are not heated by conduction from the melt in use but heated by circulation of a liquid or gaseous heating medium therearound. The variable length of the melt duct may be achieved by the use of more than one helical turn 11 or by replacing the duct by cylindrical tubes, one sliding within the other in a fluid-tight manner. The heating container may be subdivided into two heating sections by a partition above the nozzle assembly, and a separate supply of heating medium may circulate in each section.
