Abstract

A machine 200 for collating sheet material comprises a series of units 100 arranged in side-by-side operative relationship, each unit including a series of superposed sheet-collecting trays, each tray having at its entrance a sheetdiverting mechanism which, on actuation by mechanism controlled by a programmed control device M-2, either feeds the oncoming sheet into the tray or diverts it for subsequent delivery to a tray lower down. Photo-electric cells are used so that the diverting mechanisms are actuated by moving sheets. Surplus sheets, i.e. sheets surplus to the number of collecting trays in the machine, are diverted to a collecting bin which is arranged in the sheet flow path before the trays. Any sheet jam occurring in the machine causes an automatic mechanism to divert any sheets fed subsequent to the jam to the collecting bin. The top of each collator unit is hinged to provide ready access to the sheet flow path of the machine.
