Abstract
Vinyl chloride is polymerized alone or with a minor amount of a comonomer continuously at below 0 C. using an organo-boron compound and an organic hydroperoxide catalyst system having a peroxide : boron molar ratio of 0À9-1À2 and maintaining the reaction time within 20% of the optimum time D (in minutes) as expressed by the equation: where T is the absolute temperature. Preferred catalyst is boron triethylcumene hydroperoxide the boron compound may be present as an ether complex. A diluent such as ethyl chloride, methyl chloride or dichloroethane may be used. Specified comonomers are vinylidene chloride, mono-, di-, tri- or tetra-fluorethylene, vinyl acetate, methyl-, ethyl-, butyl- or allylacrylate or -methacrylate, allyl halide, acrylonitrile, styrene or ethylene. The reaction effluent is discharged into a mild aqueous alkali and the polymer suspension centrifuged, washed and dried. The polymers have molecular weights of 50,000-120,000 and have high syndiotacticity and second order transition temperature and are used to make fibres.
